Two charged with armed robbery of Lee’s Summit convenience store

Two men have been charged with allegedly using a ski mask and a shotgun to rob a Lee’s Summit convenience store. Robert N. McGinley was charged with first-degree robbery, armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a weapon. His bond was set at $150,000 cash only.

The victim of a hit and run traffic incident Wednesday in the Waldo area died this morning, Kansas City police said. Police said that 56-year-old Paul Allegri was struck by a vehicle about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at 77th Terrace and Main Street.

Waldo rapist investigation continues to grow

Kansas City police now have received 733 tips and dedicated 21 detectives plus six sergeants to catching the so-called Waldo rapist. The investigation has grown so large that it’s been moved out of the sex crimes unit at police headquarters and into the city’s Emergency Operations Center, police Chief Jim Corwin announced today.

Wyandotte County prosecutors today charged two people related to a high-speed police chase of a stolen Jeep on Monday. Jeffrey M. Haywood, 39, of Independence, is charged with felony eluding police, felony theft, misdemeanor theft and possessing marijuana.

Police identified the man found dead with apparent gunshot wounds inside a Riverside apartment as Hassan Abbas, 32. Abbas, who was from the Sudan, was a student at Metropolitan Community College–Maple Woods, according to police.
Kansas City man gets more than 12 years for Leavenworth church arson

A federal judge in Kansas today sentenced a former church music director to more than 12 years for setting fire to a Leavenworth church. Carva Lee White, 46, of Kansas City, pleaded guilty to mail fraud and arson in an attempt to commit mail fraud.

Kansas City police are seeking the public’s help to locate Donald L. Dudley. He was last seen Monday walking south in the 6900 block of Jackson Street. His family has not seen or heard from him since, and relatives are concerned for his safety.

A man was critically injured tonight in Kansas City when a woman he was arguing with ran over him with her Jeep Wrangler and then left the scene. Around 7 p.m., a witness watched as a 49-year-old woman backed out of a driveway just west of 77th Terrace and Main Street in Kansas City.

Johnson County judge sentences man to 25 years for kidnapping and sex crimes

A Johnson County judge has sentenced an Independence man to 25 years in a complex kidnapping and rape case that unfolded on both sides of the state line. Joshua Maudlin, 34, pleaded guilty previously to the kidnap, sodomy and rape of a woman when he took her from Overland Park to Independence.
Flooding closes Missouri Route E in Platte County

Flooding along the Platte River has forced transportation officials to close Missouri Route E in rural Platte County west of Ridgley. Route E is closed between Missouri Route DD and Missouri Route B, according to the Missouri Department of Transportation’s Web site.

Mother charged with using iron to burn mentally disabled son

A Kansas City woman has been accused of burning her mentally disabled son with an iron. Helen E. Settles, 41, has been charged in Jackson County Circuit Court with one count of first-degree domestic assault that caused serious physical injury and one count of armed criminal action, both felonies.

Raymond A. Lapietra was drunk, high and driving with a suspended license for the seventh time when he caused the crash that killed a 25-year-old Adrian woman, court documents filed today allege. Lapietra, 26, of Blue Springs is charged in Jackson County Circuit Court with involuntary vehicular manslaughter and endangering a child while intoxicated.

A wreck that shut down U.S. 71 near Belton this afternoon started when a semi lost control and struck three vehicles. The southbound semi carried one of the vehicles across the highway median into steel barriers of the northbound lanes, according to Belton Police.

Kansas City police are looking for a 17-year-old girl accused of driving drunk and causing a wreck that killed another teen and a baby boy. Victoria K. Johnson of Kansas City is charged with involuntary vehicular manslaughter, endangering the welfare of a child and operating a vehicle without a license.
Burglars break into Merriam animal shelters

Burglars broke into both Animal Haven shelters in Merriam on Monday night or Tuesday morning and took money, police said. Officials at the nonprofit shelter said they are still assessing damages to its main location at 9800 W. 67th St. and to its Lost Pet Center across the street.

Driver seriously injured when struck by his own truck at rock quarry

A 77-year-old Kearney man was seriously injured Monday afternoon after he got out of his truck at a rock quarry and it rolled backwards striking him. The incident occurred about 1:50 p.m. on private property near Southeast 248th Street and Southeast Kincaid Road, about two miles east of Plattsburg, Mo., according to the Missouri Highway Patrol.
