RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A former DuPont employee who admitted stealing trade secrets will spend 18 months in prison. Michael David Mitchell also must pay DuPont nearly $188,000 in restitution. The 52-year-old Chesterfield County resident was sentenced Thursday by U.S. District Judge James R. Spencer.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A Richmond man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison on dogfighting-related charges. Authorities believe it’s the longest sentence ever handed down in Virginia in a dogfighting case.

Truck driver gets $600,000 for false imprisonment

FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) - A former driver for a Fairfax County trucking company has been awarded nearly $600,000 by a jury after spending more than a month in jail because the company claimed he had stolen a trailer.
Newport News police investigate early-morning homicide

NEWPORT NEWS Police are investigating the homicide early this morning of a man at the Pinedale Manor Apartments. About 12:30 a.m., police received a call about a shooting in the 700 block of Adams Drive, they reported today. Officers and paramedics found the victim on the sidewalk with apparent gunshot wounds to his upper body. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Teen’s killer faces execution tonight in Virginia

RICHMOND Virginia is set tonight to execute a man who killed a teen girl, then bragged about it to prosecutors once he thought he could not face the death penalty. Thirty-one-year-old Paul Warner Powell is scheduled to die at 9 p.m. at Greensville Correctional Center in Jarratt. He chose to die by electrocution rather than lethal injection.

BLACKSBURG Virginia Tech is urging calm as e-mails and Internet postings originating in Italy threaten another attack on campus. Though police do not believe the threats are credible, President Charles Steger said in an e-mail to faculty and students Wednesday that classes will be held Thursday with additional security across campus.

Chesapeake man bitten in attack by pet monkey

CHESAPEAKE Police say a monkey bit its 60-year-old owner several times Wednesday when the man stepped on its tail. Animal Control is investigating the incident, which occurred in the 800 block of Washington Drive about 6 p.m. Police did not know the type or age of the monkey but said the owner had it for several years. He also had a permit for the monkey.
Man guilty in 2009 stabbing death at Oceanfront; jury recommends 25 years

VIRGINIA BEACH A jury this morning convicted Darron Marques Cary, 23, of second-degree murder in the stabbing of Bryant Leary, 20, on May 28, 2009. The jury recommended a sentence of 25 years. Cary’s sentencing is set for May 26. Prosecutor Charisse L. Black said in her opening statement that Cary got into a fight with Leary at the Oceanfront, pulled out a knife and stabbed Leary.
